Ursula turned her back to him, picked up a book from the bedside table and opened it, the sharp corner of a page slicing her finger.

Jared paged Michelle at 7:45. She didn't call. Brad and Russell picked Jared up at 8:30. They arrived at the party at 9:30. They stood in a corner and drank Natural Light. Jared looked at cat stuff. There were cat paintings, cat throw pillows, and cat figurines. Jared looked at the party. He saw Curt Fernandez ash his cigarette in a glass filled with dark water. Jared thought "Curt Fernandez. What the fuck was she thinking? He's a sophomore. He's five feet tall. Fuck that guy.”

I became one of those people: a classifieds fiend. My plan was to construct a past out of detritus. My biography would read as a collage of collected lives.

Of the possibilities he has written down, there is one that nags at him. They wouldn’t have sent it without payment, he reasons, and I didn’t pay them. That leaves a third party. He tries to think of a suspect, but comes up empty.

I look at her and for some reason I don't even mind that the blinds are open or that she's holding my hand and I stand and raise my arms while she pulls my shirt over my head and then my pants are off and the tear's still on her cheek so I wipe it with my finger. After I have my suit on I find myself shrinking, holding her, almost cowering into her dress and saying, 'Okay...Okay.' When we leave the apartment and walk outside there's no one anywhere except for a bum and who he stares at us while I kiss Lettuce Party and he sits in the gutter and picks up a cigarette butt and watches us kiss and after we finish he asks if I have fifteen dollars and I tell him I don't and he says, 'Thanks anyway,' and walks off down the street.

You’ve taken a lot of road trips, most by yourself, some with friends, and this just feels like a road trip like any other. Like you’re going out to see a roadside attraction. Like you’re not going to a funeral.

The digital era is allowing us to do so many things with the written word, creating new forms and genres. It also has the capacity to bring an old art form back from the literary dead, such as the Choose Your Own Adventure, which I spoke about in the last section. Let's face it, we're never going to see the Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA) back in print, but digital has allowed us to resurrect this childhood memory, and the writing skills that were lost with it.

Dirigent
dýchal pomaly, hlboko. V tichosti prebehol pohľadom po
jedálni, dôkladne spočinúc zrakom na každom jednom človeku: Na
jeho krásnej dcére, ktorá dopíjala už určite vychladnutú kávu
a s podliatymi, no napätými očami očakávala verdikt,
na tom zvláštnom cudzom chalanovi, ktorý napoly spal, napoly sa
snažil dávať pozor, no napriek tomu, že ho dnes videl
prvý raz, do tejto domácnosti akosi zapadal, až sa na koniec
zahľadel do modrých očí svojej ženy,
z ktorých pramenila bezpodmienečná podpora a útecha. Nadýchol
sa a poslednýkrát sa teda opýtal: „Predpokladám teda, že nie
je šanca, že by si si to rozmyslel, že by si to búranie
zastavil?“
